S.F. may consider ban on unsolicited phone directories

San Francisco could become the first city in the country to require distributors of the Yellow Pages to ask businesses and residents if they would like a copy of the hefty tome before leaving it on the doorstep, under new legislation introduced today.

A new web site is giving Americans a way to say "no thanks" to the deliveries of yellow pages phone books. Starting today, the Yellow Pages Association has set up a one-stop shop, ww.yellowpagesoptout.com, where people can log on and opt out. Since launching at midnight, the site has slowed to a crawl, apparently due to a surge of web traffic from interested consumers.
